Which materials can I use to clad an interior wall?

¿Con qué materiales puedo revestir una pared interior?

When it comes to cladding an interior wall, the majority of home-owners turn to materials such as dry partitions, panels or plaster. However, there are other materials that can also be used, and stone is one of the most popular choices. Stone can be used to create an attractive and long-lasting wall facing that will last for years.

Types of materials for cladding internal walls

There are many types of stone that can be used for cladding both interior and exterior walls, and each of these has its own appearance and feel. The most popular choices are granite, marble, limestone, slate, sandstone and artificial stone, which has seen a spectacular boom.

Artificial wall cladding is the most cost-effective and environmentally-friendly option. It is one of the most notable eco materials for interior and exterior design. This cladding is made from recycled materials such as glass, metal and plastic. Therefore, the production of artificial stone requires less energy and resources than natural stone. Eco stone cladding is also available in a large variety of shades and designs, which makes it the ideal alternative for architects and owners of state-of-the-art homes. Last but not least, artificial stone cladding is easier to install than natural stone, so you can enjoy your new décor a lot sooner.

Advantages of artificial stone as opposed to natural stone

The benefits of artificial stone when compared to natural stone are that the latter is very heavy, so it is difficult to work and to handle. It can also be difficult if it doesn’t adhere well to some surfaces and substrates.

Natural stone is more expensive, has a shorter useful life and is not as long-lasting as other alternatives. In contrast, THERMOSTONE® stone is much lighter. It adheres to almost all surfaces and substrates more easily and more quickly. Its appearance is practically the same as any other monolithic rock that can be found in nature, but its features make it a stone that is sustainable and long-lasting. All our stones are guaranteed for 30 years, which makes THERMOSTONE® stone a great choice.

How to clad a wall with stone

Once you have chosen the perfect stone for your project, the next step is to determine how to fix it to the wall. Artificial stone can be fixed with mortar or adhesive, and it is important to choose the right product for use with the stone. If you are going to use the stone in a humid area, such as a shower, it is also important to choose a waterproof adhesive or mortar.

Fixing the stone with mortar or adhesive is very similar:

1. Start by mixing the mortar or adhesive according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

2. Then, apply the mortar or adhesive to the back of the stone with a palette.

3. When the stone is completely covered, press it into place on the wall.

4. Use a level to make sure that the stone is uniform and then leave the mortar or adhesive to fully dry before continuing.

Once the stone is fixed to the wall, you will need to finish off by applying a sealer. This protects the stone from efflorescences and stains. It is also important to choose a sealer that is compatible with the type of stone being used. For example, if you are using a natural stone such as marble, you will need to use a different sealer to that you would use for an artificial stone such as THERMOSTONE®. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when applying the sealer.

Sealers can be applied with a brush, a roller or a sprayer. If you use a brush, start at one corner and advance from there. To obtain the best results, apply two thin coats rather than one thick one. Let the first coat dry completely before applying the second one. If you use a roller or sprayer, be sure to apply a uniform coat over the whole surface of the wall. Again, let the first coat dry completely before applying the second coat.

After the sealer has dried, your new stone wall will be ready and you will be able to enjoy the new décor on your walls.
